Members of 30 unions will be taking industrial action for a fair deal on pensions tomorrow, and seven other unions will be lending campaigning support.
Here are a few things you might like to consider to make the day as successful as possible:
1: Show your colours
We’ll get a rough ride in much of the media tomorrow, but the good news is that personal connections can trump the papers any day. Talk to your friends who aren’t involved about why you are, and show them that you’re supporting the Day of Action by changing your profile picture on Facebook or Twitter. Here are some suggestions on doing this.
If you’re reading coverage of the day online, look out for opinion polls and comment boxes, and give them your 2pworth. Often misinformation and mistakes go unchallenged on news sites and blogs. If everyone taking action tomorrow added just one comment to a news piece, we could do a lot to change other readers’ opinions.
2. Get together offline
There are now over 200 local events around the country listed on the False Economy event map. Take a moment to find your nearest and pop along to offer solidarity. If you’re not striking yourself, please drop by a picket if you see one at a local public service workplace, and let the strikers know they’ve got your support – It’ll be much appreciated.
3. Say it in song
If you’re listening to the radio tomorrow, why not help boost morale a bit by getting the DJ to play a song to show your support for public service workers. The Workers’ site has some ideas on this. You could request their version of Let’s Work Together, or pick another song that you think will raise spirits (and stand a good chance of getting played!)
4. Tell us all what you’re doing
We’ll be running a live blog for the day, highlighting some of what we’re picking up online and what’s being said. Check it out throughout the day to get the latest picture of local and national actions. Many unions are also running their own live blogs, and would like to get your feedback on how the day is going, so check out your own union’s website as well.
